Chapter 5: The Trap Was Built Before You Arrived
Imagine you walked into a building and immediately felt confused. Disoriented. Unable to find the exit.
The hallways curved in strange directions. The lights were too bright in some places and too dim in others. The carpet patterns made your eyes swim. You kept ending up back where you started, even though you were trying to leave.
What would your first thought be?
Would it be: There's something wrong with me. I must be terrible at navigating buildings. I need to work on my hallway-finding discipline?
Or would you wonder something else entirely: Who designed this place? And why did they make it so hard to leave?
The answer seems obvious when we're talking about a physical building. Of course the architect is responsible for the experience of the person inside. Of course a confusing building reflects the intent of its designer, not the deficiency of its user.
Now think about the app on your phone. The sportsbook. The trading platform. The casino floor. The loot box interface. The scratch-off ticket display at the gas station counter.
Have you ever asked who designed those environments? And what they were trying to make you do?
